Multiple HDD , Turn Off... ?

I have 2 WD Blue drives (1x2TB) and 1 320gb Toshiba 2.5 laptop hdd.

I find one of the WD drive to be a bit noisy ( its an older model actually...yeah got tricked buying that )

So I set the Turn Off HDD after to 15 minutes , since I don't use that other drive too often this eliminates the noise quite a lot.

But I have heard long back that Turning HDD on and OFF can make it wear down much more faster? Is It True ?

If it is not false , is it allright if I decrease the Turn Off Time to say 5  minutes ?

While I am not an expert on hard drives, I think it'd be okay to set it to 5 mins without wearing it down much faster. If it starts making weird sounds, back the drive up ASAP.

oh its brand new RMA drive, its not exactly weird noise...its just I can hear it spin...so loud yeah ...the partition is practically empty ...

Hi DaniJ, I would be glad to help you out on this one. First, I suggest you to run the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics test on the WD hard drive using the guide at the below link:

Many hard drives have AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management) setting which controls the performance and consequently the noise it makes. Alternatively, I would recommend you to download and install the HD Tune. Once installed, you will find a slider on the AAM tab to choose between low and higher noise margin.
