So my brother brought over his old 320GB laptop drive and he wanted me to get some files off of it. For some reason when i have the laptop drive plugged in my comp fails to load into windows. I know it's booting from my HDD because it's loading windows 7 and the laptop drive has windows vista.

I tried plugging it into a different SATA port and that didn't seem to do anything. The only thing i can think of now is unplugging the SATA cable on the laptop drive and plugging it in while the computer has booted into windows but i don't know if that's a bad idea.

Do you by chance have a usb to sata?

Well you could try plugging it in once your computer is at the windows 7 loading screen. Leave the power plugged in just plug in the data cable.

Sata won't allow you to hot swap.-

You have to plug in both drives, and from the Bios /UEFI set what's the boot drive, and be sure it recognized both drives.

That's weird. Don't you have a USB drive with a Linux distro around? Just boot from Live and mount the drives to recover the data
