Hi guys,

I've been planning to build a new desktop myself for a while now, having had the last ones built by a local shop here. Now, in the past week, my oldest pc has been rapidly dying on me so I'll need to start buying the components sooner than planned. This is what I had been looking for:

Case: Corsair obsidian 750d

Mobo: Asus maximus VII hero or Asus z97 deluxe(still a toss-up between these two, any thoughts are appreciated)

CPU: Intel core I5 4690k boxed

CPU cooler: corsair Hydro H110

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 780Ti 3gb SC

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16gb

PSU: Coolermaster V series V850

HDD: WD Red 3TB

SSD: Crucial M500 120GB

So, I'd aprecciate any thoughts on this build but specifically on whether waiting another six/ten months(as this was plan A) concerning any future releases that would make this worth the wait.

Thanks in advance,

Casper

Hmm... it's overkill con various unnecessary part, The case is way too big for your build, You may want a 450D instead, Mobo is Overkill, probably you should change to a MSI Z87 G45 or Gaming 5 unless you are going to use all the function those ASUS board offer.

While 780TI is a very powerful card... do you really need it? I dont think it worth the extra 200$ compare to a GTX 780, plus if you plan to go with >= 1440p resolution or 3 monitors setup then get the 6GB version instead.

PSU is way overkill, for 1 GPU like this you need at most a 700W PSU, I'd suggest a 600W instead. If you plan to do 2 ways SLI in the future then get a 750 or 800W

For HDD dont get the WD Red, get Blue or Black instead, or change to Seagate Barracuda

My rig: Intel Core i7 4790k | MSI Z97 PC Mate | GSKILL Ripjaws X 16GB 1866MHz | ADATA Premier SP550 480GB SSD | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | Seagate Barracuda 2TB  | MSI Gaming X GTX 1070 | Thermaltake Versa N21 | Corsair CX550M Semi Modular PSU | AOC G2460PF 144Hz | Logitech G502 | GSKILL Ripjaws KM780  | GAMDIAS HEPHAESTUS V2  PCPartPicker | Old Build Log | New Build Log

This is meant to be a gaming pc obviously. I've just read the Build Plan Thread Recommendations so I should probably add that I live in Belgium and everything listed fits into my budget. I will also be running only one monitor(a BenQ GW2760HE).

If it fits in your budget... it's your call. However, have you considered AMD manufactured graphics cards? Mantle and FreeSync...  ^_^

EDIT: Otherwise, the build looks solid. Do you plan to upgrade in the future? Is that why you chose a larger case and a more premium motherboard?

I've had some negative experiences with AMD/ATI in the past so I'd rather go Nvidia. But if the mentioned features make them significantly better than equally priced GeForces, feel free to elaborate :)

Allright, that's kind of what I was afraid of.

So what kind of PSU would you recommend in the 700W range(since I'm quite paranoid about my system running out of juice I prefer to be a bit over maximum power requirements).

The 450D is also something I considered for this build and it actually has a grill on the front, which the 750D didn't have. I liked this aesthetically but I was always worried about the cooling performance of such a setup.

The GPU is a case of futureproofing the system, I dont want to be spending money on this anytime soon. I guess that also answers the "Do you plan to SLI in the future?" question. The options for a GPU were to either buy a 780ti now or get 2 780 in the future.

About the Mobo, I wanted to take the Z97 chipset for futureproofing again, or would this be irrelevant in that respect? I could also go for a maximus ranger would that still be overkill?

The performance variable is negligible, given you have adequate airflow with decent fans. I would recommend the 450D, if you don't plan to upgrade in the future to an SLI or CrossFire setup. As for the PSU, you don't need it. Get a 700W. But if you plan to get a second GPU, get a bigger case and a ~1000W PSU.

As for Nvidia vs. AMD, it all comes down to personal preference. Make your call; use your judgement. Performance benchmarks for similarly tiered GPUs from both companies show somewhat negligible variables. Variables in real world experiences are even more negligible. Howver, AMD historically has tended to have more performance per dollar; whereas, Nvidia historically (and especially more recently) has tended to have more performance per Watt. So... Make your call. Save with AMD and get a slightly bigger PSU. Or buy Nvidia and get a slightly smaller PSU.

Mantle and FreeSync are two features (hopefully future standards) that I would definitely recommend, especially with Intel getting interested in Mantle. But a man can speculate...

One question at a time then:

For 1 GPU system you will probably need around 500W to be honest, 600W is already adding some head room in :3 for PSU just go with Corsair/CoolerMaster/SeaSonic.

You wont get better air flow with bigger case(unless you go from the mini ITX stuff), in fact it may be worse. 750D designed with watercooler in mind so it have a lot of space for pumps and stuff like that

well... the performance gain from 780 to 780Ti isnt really great, and you can look at it this way, about the time when 1 780 is not enough anymore, it price probably already drop down to around 300$, and to be honest at that time it better to just grab the newest GPU at that time, since 780 is pretty powerful. If you do 1080p gaming then probably no thing it cant handle.

About the Mobo, my typo there, I mean the MSI z97 G45, you need Z97 for the i5 4690k anyway

So, I've been looking around and this is the new parts list:

Case: Corsair Obsidian 450D

Mobo: MSI z97 g45

CPU: Intel core i5 4690k

Cooler: corsair h110

RAM: crucial ballistix tactical (x4) 16gb

HDD: seagate barracuda 3TB

SSD: crucial M500 240gb

PSU: seasonic platinum series 660W or seasonic X 750v2(with possible SLI in mind), the price is about the same

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 780

Now in the 780, there's a 3 and a 6gb version, which one should I be getting or should I just go for the 3gb more?

If you're set on buying the 780, 3GB is enough given the resolution of your monitor.

I would also recommend instead an aftermarket ASUS or MSI 290X... But it's your call.  ^_^

You get an extra 1GB of VRAM for basically the same price and support for Mantle and FreeSync... FreeSync being the more exciting feature right now...

Mantle needs more support. But if you didn't know, Intel is interested in Mantle (they are the biggest GPU manufacturer).

I'm just waiting for FreeSync supported monitors. But it's cool that you can buy a G-Sync module and tinker with your monitor.

As for the PSU, either one is perfect really. Do you want 87% efficiency or 92%? haha  :P

I'm probably still going to go for an Nvidia, you almost had me though :) But I can get a EVGA Geforce 780 classified for about 20 euros more than for a 290x.

Although, looking further into it, AMD might be a better option at the moment since it outperforms most others out of the box.

I can get these locally:

MSI Radeon R9 290X Gaming 4G Sapphire R9 290X 4GB GDDR5 OC TRI-X

and for comparison

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Dual Classified ACX Cooling

So, anyone want to cast their thoughts on these?
