Hello, I'm making my first computer and I need help choosing a motherboard.

1150 Support

Possibility to CrossfireX one day

Now here is the tricky part I think, I'm going with a white Define R4 Windowed, and I would like a White and Blue style overall, so the ram will be blue or white, I'm going with a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X which is yellow but that doesn't really matter. The motherboard needs to match everything else Red and Black (which seems to be the norm) wouldn't go well with White and Blue (or would it ;) )

If you could just suggest some motherboards I'd appreciate it.

Jack

How do you people know what to put here ?

Well what is your budget? And what CPU are you using? Are you planning on overclocking your CPU? Any preferences on the formfactor? What about an ASUS Z97-K? It's pretty ordinary imo. Or a MSI Z97 U3 Plus? That would fit your colour scheme.

ASUS ROG Strix B550-F + AMD Ryzen 5800X3D; ASUS 6800XT TUF; 16GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600; bequiet! Dark Power 13 850W; Samsung 860 Pro M.2 2TB; PHANTEKS Evolve X

Probably the first thing that comes to mind are MSI z87 motherboards, here's another one  They look pretty nice and fit your needs.

Thanks alot, I'm going to look in to them a bit more to find the right one :)

I think Blue is underappreciated :D

I'm looking at the Z97 are they the same as the Z97 GAMING ? Is it just a tacked on word at the end ? Would this work ? I really like the look of the U3 but the website I'm on doesn't have it, it's the little blocks with the logo on that I like, useless but pretty :D

Also what is the difference between Z87 and Z97 ?

The word "gaming" in the PC parts industry (usually) is just a name. A gaming grade motherboard will have few features that normal mobos don't and usually share the same "gamer" look with red (or other color) accents and have a higher price tag. Watch Linus's

for more details. Z97 is an incremental upgrade, adding support for faster SATA speeds using different SATA connectors and M.2 support. Nothing big, Z87 will be here for some time.

As for the U3, it seems to be a very solid (and good looking) motherboard for 120$. The difference between it and other MSI motherboards are very minor. It has all the features you'd need such as crossfire support, 4 dims for memory, and USB 3.0. I would recommend it it especially for a blue and black build.

Yep Gigabyte is doing pretty good stuff. They have the reputation to be the most stable and reliable motherboards, but the software included seems a bit oldfashioned sometimes. But I don't really think of that as an issue.

If you are really sure that you won't overclock you could safe some bucks and get a H87/H97 motherboard. They are the same as the Z models, but without overclocking features. And if you go with an H model and you haven't bought the CPU yet you could buy a non-K CPU, like the i5 4690.

I would go with a 4690K or a 4690 anyway, because it's the Haswell refresh and offers better heat transfer.

Z97 offers M.2 and SATA Express, which both haven't arrived yet on the storage side. There are pretty much no M.2 or SATA Express drives available at the moment. But the real advantage of Z97/H97 is the better compatiblity with Devils Canyon (haswell refresh). If you live in France and you are interested in the U3 you could import it from germany I guess, although I don't now how much the shipping will cost you (but it shouldn't be that much)

EDIT: This is a german side where I often buy my hardware. They also ship to france. The shipping costs 10€, the mainboard itself 110€. Here's the link:

If you like the looks of the U3 Plus the MSI Z97-G55 SLI will please you, too. It's only a few bucks more. Maybe your site offers it?
