Hi Snipermachinema, as I know is that, My Book for Mac is an external HDD, so why did you still planning to open the case and use it as external hard disk (if I understand you correctly)? I would not advise you to open the case of My Book for Mac because it means that you are violating the warranty (if you still have it).

I have done this several times in the past.  Yes, you can do it.  Yus_WD is right - you void your warranty by doing this.  You have to be careful about this now because newer external drives have the control board built into the drive so you can't use it for the purposes you are proposing.  If the drive is a couple of years old, you might have some luck.

My MacBook Pro from 3 years ago, I was able to harvest one of the external drives.  I removed my DVD drive from the MacBook and replaced it with OWC's kit.  It essentially doubled my storage capacity and I never used CD/DVDs anymore - everything is USB now anyway.
