I was searching for a Bluetooth/wireless combo on NewEgg (found one) and I found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4DR1KC2886

 

Unless there is some kind of size constraint, they're pointless! They have the same pinouts, just the 24-pin would hang over (using my CX430M on an old Pentium 3 board, I would know). And even then, most power supplies (like my CX430M) will let you unhook the additional 4-pin from the main 20-pin, so that it should fit!

Well they're there for the PSU's that don't allow the extra 4 pins to split off otherwise a 24 pin will not fit. Not pointless.

You didn't point out the fact that a 24 pin that does not split will NOT fit into a 20 pin, therefore these adapters are necessary.

And they do fit (my CX430M is happily powering HELIOS as I type), but on some motherboards (my other old Gateway especially) there is no room for the extra 4-pin block to hang over.

It fits because it is a 20+4pin. The extra 4 pins come away.
