Nintendo 3DS "bombed"?

I watched the live stream last night and remember Slick saying that the 3DS "bombed" around the 24 minute mark.  I was just wondering in what context was he speaking?  He said that 3D was not the right technology/direction that Nintendo should have gone but ended with "it doesn't make a difference because they're still doing great."  I think the last part was referring to Nintendo as a company.  The 3DS was the best selling gaming device (excluding smartphones and tablets) in 2012 with total hardware sales of over 31 million units in 2 years.

This year seems to be no different and is expected to equal or surpass 2012 because of the solid lineup of games coming out.

The 3DS outsold the PS3's total hardware sales in Japan in under 2 years.

One reason Slick may have said it bombed is because the total hardware sales of the 3DS is dwarfed by the old DS sales of 154 million.  The 3DS is just behind the rate at which the DS sold at just more than 2 years old.   But the DS had three holiday seasons versus the 3DS' two to sell in this time span.    Another possibility is that it isn't a huge success in North America like it is in Japan, but it still has sold close to 8 million units in the US.  Slick and his close friends may not own one, but I still don't think this qualifies as bombing.

In the UK 3DS is very very popular with kids (their all pokemon crazy) so I was quite surprised when this was mentioned in the livestream too.

Nintendo even when they are selling so much is still close to the edge and as dev teams are leaving them it shows quite a big problem so they are not in a good situation. I dont think they even have enough to make another decent console. EG a 3ds with psp graphics or better

This is true for the Wii U (with EA games), but the 3DS is a unique beast.  3 out of the top 5 selling games for individual gaming devices this year so far are on the 3DS.  Out of the top 10 selling 3DS games of all time, 9 of them are published by Nintendo.  People are buying the 3DS for console exclusives which in this case are almost all in house Nintendo developed games.

The 3DS and even sales for the long toothed DS is keeping the company afloat right now.  On the other end of the spectrum, the Wii U is dragging them down big time.  They actually made a profit last year ($72M) and in the first quarter 2013.  But you can't correlate the success of a single product with how poorly the company is doing as a whole.  I mean look at Sony stocks for example, they've plummeted in the last 5 years.  Sony took a loss of close to $600 million in 2012 and $5.7 BILLION the year before.  This has nothing to do with the PS3 because that console has been a success even up until now.

Sony are slowly creeping back up but they took a BAD hit. I dont like nintendo, they make bullshit consoles(be honest their consoles are a pile of worthless crap) however the games they make are awesome but when they spend less then (Ouya i bet) sony and microsoft and apple if they actually join in. I hope that they some day sell their franchises like pokemon and zelda(F MARIO) and then go bankcrupt.

I sense byass in your post, lol.  Nintendo won't be going away soon.  They're the only company to make a profit on hardware compared to MS and Sony and sold more software titles last generation.  The Wii is inferior to the 360 and ps3 in every way, especially when the wiimote novelty ran out 3 years ago.  But in terms of pure profit, even with the lesser product, Nintendo won the last console war.

 

I wouldn't say Sony is creeping back just yet.  They made a profit of $435 million this quarter by selling their two main buildings in New York and Tokyo for $2.3 billion, not for selling product.  Their credit rating was downgraded to "junk" by Fitch ratings in November last year.  But I'm hoping they pull through with the PS4, for AMD's sake.

 

And in case you're wondering,  I mainly PC game but I own a 360 that I played exclusively for fighting games.  Its been collecting dust for 2 years.

i have a ps3 well only for granturismo 5 and when i finished that in a day or two i was sad. gt4 took me about 6months to finish. Hope gt6 is good even when i may never get to try it out.
