Substantial preformance decrease after adding an old HDD

A week ago I added an old HDD from a old laptop to my desktop PC. When I added the HDD I went from having 120 FPS in Leauge and CS:GO to 9 FPS in both. I couldn't even browse the internet in chrome without tabs crashing and freezing all over the place. I didn't think it was the HDD that slowed my PC down because it's not the main drive so I reinstalled Windows but it didn't fix it. I disconnected the HDD but it didn't fix it so now I dont know what the source of the problem is now cause everything is running at stockspeed and I've got the latest drivers.

Mobo: Asus Crosshair V Formula Z BIOS 1801

CPU: AMD FX-8350

GPU: Asus Geforce 9600 GT

HDD: 500GB Caviar Blue (main drive), 250GB, 160GB

RAM: 4GB

PSU: 500W FSP PSU

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro

It could be some malware sapping your system resources... Try getting avast and do a boot scan of the system...

I would remove the HDD causing the problem, reset the bios and restore to your usual settings.

The computer isn't the "Thing".....the computer is the "Thing" that gets you to the "Thing".  - excerpt from "Halt and Catch Fire".

If that's so, the HDD might be dying... But, it's rare for a dying HDD to affect overall system performance for something like that unless you've got something running in the background, like malware, or hyperactive antivirus software, or something else entirely...

I've had an experience like this with a dying flash drive... The system freezes up when trying to open it so it might be something similar... Try to listen for abnormally loud noises from the hard drive...
