The weirdest SSD/HDD Problem

Go to solution Solved by TNJ89,

Intel RMA my drive, and they did.

I sent it back to them and now 2days later I got a new one. all at the cost of nothing.

thanks for any input.

Hardware used:

Intel ssd 320 160Gb from 2011 and have been used, and been working until now.

laptop asus X54C it is stock and working. Have the newest bios to. The system still works with it's old drive

In short

When "plugged" into an installed system it displays as only 8mb, when running the windows install it shows as 149Gb or 8mb

Those details

I got a "new" second hand laptop, with the slowest hard drive in the world(when used to ssd speed)

The ssd I had in my old laptop, have been used for as an external drive for a short time, and working fine, and used it the same day as i put it in my new laptop. But on first bootup(for windows install i only showed as 8mb)

I got in my desktop to format it, just incase that were the problem, but the same thing here 8mb and can only be seen with Disc manager and i can't do anything with it.
so just for the fun of it put in my new laptop again, to try and see if could format it that way, but then it displays 149Gb  and could click next but it is not an bootable object, so i tried to use the format that is available but, it is grey(can not be used).

Then i got the idea to format it through CMD on my desktop but it is not displaying in CMD, so that is not an option.

What i've done so far:

Tried to format/initialize through Disc manager

Tried to format  through CMD >Diskpart

I have tried to use WIN7 32bit and 64bit. legal copies.

I  have tried to use different external drive cages and put it directly to the motherboard. Still shows 8mb.

Tried altering Bios mode for AHCI/IDE no difference edit

Intel® Data Migration Software. (Another way of setting the drive back to zero it will only work on intel drives.) edit

Tried to perform a Low level format with HDDGuru but can't be done do to lack of sectors, tried another program but only sees the 8Mb and did no difference edit

I tried to google my way out. But can't, solve the problem.

Any idea what's wrong?

Ill try to keep the list up to date.

Sorry for any bad grammar or misspells

So, you got a new SSD and want to use it in an old laptop, which shows the SSD has 8mb of free space during installation even though you formatted it?

Search in the BIOS for something like: Hard drive mode, with the options IDE/AHCI/RAID

My bad not for saying that the drive is from 2011  (It have now been corrected), and have been in an old laptop so the ssd is not new. but it have 5 years warranty.

Bios set to ahci?

Try a lowlevel format! that usually helps if not send it back.

I have 2 settings AHCI/ IDE non do any difference.

Lowlevel can't be done do to the low amount of sectors minimum requirement is 65535 sectors. that is the one from HDDGuru, found another one but it only low levels the 8Mb.

I will try to another program to perform low level erase. Got any suggestions to do it different? or other program?

Do you have another computer to try it in?

If it works in another computer (with correct formatting), then your last bet is updating the BIOS of your laptop.

Read descripcion and you will find the answer ;-)

1st question 9th line

2nd question is 3rd line and 9th line

Not trying to be an ass but when it is in the description.....

Sorry, I try to answer many questions on these forums and I usually forget the details in the first post...

If it does the same thing in another system then yeah definately RMA it.

Update from Intel support they had another trick up their sleeve.

draft from the mail i got from them:

If you cannot connect your SSD as a secondary drive to a system with a windows* operating system.

You can use the Intel® Data Migration Software to create a bootable device (ex: USB stick) and use the drive cleanse function for a low level format of the SSD. Please note that this will delete all the data on the SSD.

You can download the software on: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=19324

You can find the user guide here:  http://downloadmirror.intel.com/19324/eng/Intel_Data_Migration_Software_User_Guide_324324-002US.pdf

I have edited the description so this is now included in what i have done so far.
