So my friend and I started a side by side play through of far cry 3. It was going very smoothly until he said he noticed lag even on the lowest settings. I thought this was strange due to the fact that his laptop comes with an Nvidia 745M. I fire up teamviewer and start looking around and when I try to open up the Nvidia software and settings menus i get a message saying no Nvidia Gpu is connected. His laptop comes with both a dedicated GPU and integrated graphics for browsing and what not.

Is there anyway to enable his GPU?

I also cannot access any type of Nvidia menus such as whitelists or general settings (this means no "run with gaming graphics option").

I had this problem on my Dell Inspiron which used a 525m chip. What worked for me was uninstalling the video card drivers, flashing the bios to the latest available, and reinstalling the latest drivers.

Also make sure that on your nvidia control panel, you set your 745m to run as default, if it shows up at all after doing the above steps.

Report back.

The thing is, I can't access the Nvidia settings as the computer isn't registering the GPU as connected.

And uninstaling/reinstalling the drivers and flashing the bios has no effect?

run /dxdiag to see if the GPU shows up.

Was it a new laptop?  Return it.

My GPU still doesn't show on my laptop - the only way I know it's running is the gpu activity bar, so OP may have the same issue.

I told him to call ASUS support, and if he can't resolve it, either return it to best buy or ASUS. Thanks for your help guys.

Go to Best Buy before going to Asus.

You can force enable it in nvidia control panel nvidia optimus decides whether or not the dedicated GPU is needed or not. The built in monitor is generally hooked to the onboard and the HDMI and or display port out to the dedicated GPU.

Asus Helped him fix the problem. It was just a settings error within his computer.

ok cool.  I always recommend that if you have to return a product and you purchased it from a store, go to the store first before doing an RMA.

I'm glad he got it sorted out!
