My overclock safe?

Go to solution Solved by scaryjam823,

So far, everything is fine, except when playing flight simulator (heavilly CPU dependant) the fans on my Radiator Spin up to about maybe 80% and its really annoying... Is this an issue?

If the noise doesn't bother you it isn't.

Before anybody screams, i know that my CPU will die young because of this...

Im running at 4.8Ghz at 1.45v...

Is this safe for 12/7 usage? (more like 5/7) (5 hours per day)

Your cpu wont die any faster as long as it stays running cool. The overclock is fine as long as you have the temps under control. Though I would try to get the voltage down if you can. My 4770k can run 4.9ghz at 1.28v and be stable, not saying you can do that. All the chips overclock differently. But getting the voltage down is always best when it can be achieved.

Find your IBT/Prime95/AIDA 64 load temps. As long as it's under 85 for the most part you should be fine. This will probably push your h100i to the limits though.

I got lucky obviously :P I tried for 5ghz at 1.3v but it wasn't successful. The temps were already pretty warm even with my h100i at 4.9ghz so I didn't try any harder. But if I get a better cooling solution I will try and see if it can hit higher. :)

At 4.5ghz, which is what I run at now. Using intel burn test max temps are 80c, real world max temps are 55c. I would suggest using intel burn test to see what your temps are and monitor them while under load during real world usage. If you can keep it under 80c then you'll be fine. I just clocked mine lower because I didn't need that much extra speed and it helped lower the temps so 4.5ghz is where I have a happy balance between temps and performance.

How do you oc only one core? And if you do one core, can you have a lower voltage and a higher clock?

How do you oc only one core? And if you do one core, can you have a lower voltage and a higher clock?

You just set the first core to your overclock, the rest to whatever you want. I'm not sure the benefit would be because the processor will use all the cores anyways, seems like it would just slow down. But what you're asking is similar to intels turbostep (think that was what it was called). Default on these processors is 3.9ghz on one core. 3.8ghz on two and going down from there. I don't believe you could get a higher clock with a lower voltage this way, but I don't know much about single core overclocking. Just doesn't seem like much use to me.

With the processors overclock it's just luck of the draw. The processors weren't meant to overclock, they were made to run at their specified speeds. Any overclocking you can do is just luck, like I said some overclock better than others. Mine can overclock high with low voltage, some can't even overclock at all regardless of the voltages. It's just the luck of the silicon lottery.

In linus' haswell OC he said that after OC'ing ram, to OC single cores to higher clocks

Maybe, but in real world use that isn't much help. Having more cores at slower speeds is better than one fast core and the rest at slower speeds imo.

Why is AIDA64 saying overheating detected, when the Temp is only 55c?

I think i should lower my voltage a bit....

During the test the maximum temp was 100C for cores 1 and 3

You just set the first core to your overclock, the rest to whatever you want. So after about an hour of AIDA64. my average temp was Around 75C but the maximum was 100C, which worries me.. Is this an issue? From what i saw, it went to 100C only for a few seconds (2-3) at a time

100c is when it starts to throttle. I would take those tests with a grain of salt, take them into consideration. But also look at the temps when you do whatever you do. Mine gets pretty warm under tests, but real world use is nowhere close because you don't usually do anything that maxes all cores out to run the temps that high. The reason you didn't see it stay that hot that long is it started to throttle your cpu to lower the temps. Try intel burn test and see what it does. If it stays below 80c then you have nothing to worry about, if it hits 100c during the test then I would lower the clock down some. But again if during normal or heavy loads it doesn't hit those temps I wouldn't worry about it.

So far, everything is fine, except when playing flight simulator (heavilly CPU dependant) the fans on my Radiator Spin up to about maybe 80% and its really annoying... Is this an issue?
