I'm doing an EPQ (extended project qualification) for A-Level, and have decided to build an arcade-style joystick controller, (similar to the Madcatz Arcade Flightstick), and need to show some evidence of research.

I need to know what button layout/joystick type most people would prefer

I would be EXTREMELY grateful if you would spend a minute or two just answering my questions, it would be a massive help.

*edit* Survey has now been changed to a Google Form which can be found here

Personally prefer bat top but I can work a ball top, it's not a big deal for me. And a layout that as the most important point keeps a divide left/right like the first two ones. I could use either of those and be very happy, just needs a minor adjustment.

Case: Meatbag, humanoid - APU: Human Brain version 1.53 (stock clock) - Storage: 100TB SND (Squishy Neuron Drive) - PSU: a combined 500W of Mitochondrial cells - Optical Drives: 2 Oculi, with corrective lenses.

Thanks for your feedback :). What exactly do you mean by a minor adjustment.

I mean an adjustment on my end, I'm USED to the Mad Catz style but the second one would be easy for me to adapt to. Like I said the big thing is the left/right divide instead of a top/bottom one.

I have never used a mad catz controller and I'm not really sure what would be the best setup and for that matter i don't even know how i did it on my original xbox emulator cabinet although that is just a 6 button street fighter layout

Although I question why one of the options isn't

or flipped. I think the best option would probably be reprogrammable

Also bat

I posted this in your other thread. Not sure, where you will check first.

Easy. None of your options, layout wise. They aren't ergonomic.

Balltop, definitely. What kind of stick you want to use depends on what type of games you want to play. I personally use Seimitsu LS-32-01 Sticks with a Sanwa ball, because I recently switched back to Sanwa buttons, which are a bit more responsive than Seimitsus. Seimitsu buttons are still really good, I just happened to be in the mood for playing more shmups and not as many fighters. I can easily switch back and forth between both brands on my cab's panel.

As for the layout: SEGA. 1L6B for fighters and 1L3B or 1L4B for shmups. There are some who may prefer the TAITO layout, but IMO the buttons are too far apart with this one. It's best to print them out and see how you like them. Put your thumb on button A, when using a 4 button SEGA layout.

Also, don't buy Happ parts or cheap knock offs. A good stick needs good parts (and an enclosure that isn't too flimsy). Same as many of you feel about your mechanical Cherry switches.

Edit:

Oh, and don't buy an X-Arcade stick.

I don't really play many games for gameplay anymore honestly. I play most games just for the graphics.

Did you mislabel the madcatz layout by putting the left and right stuff on the wrong side, or is that a madcatz error?

And layout 2 seems like the most logical layout to me, with bat-top sticks.

No that is actually how they've arranged their buttons
