Hi,

I currently have a macbook pro with two thunderbolt output ports. I was looking into an external monitor for my macbook pro (I run windows on BootCamp and use it for gaming). I came across the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q. I was wondering if the thunderbolt port was the same as a displayport mini port, and if it could plug directly into the monitor, or if I would have to get some convertors. Currently, I am VERY confused on the whole thunderbolt/displayport/displayport mini thing, as on Apple's website it pretty much says: "thunderbolt isn't display port mini, but it is."

If anyone could sum up the display port thing, and give me a list of convertors (if i need any) for running the ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q on my macbook pro, that would be much appreciated.

But this isn't off topic? It's about tech...

Mini display port is identical to thunderbolt except for the fact that thunderbolt is more versatile. Mini displayport devices can be used in a thunderbolt port, but thunderbolt devices cannot be used in a mini displayport. In that sense, the apple thunderbolt display will potentially not work with mini displayport devices, but any monitor supporting displayport can be used for your macbook pro.

Mini displayport is the smaller version of displayport, like how mini hdmi is the smaller version of hdmi. It doesn't need expensive cables or converters. If the monitor is displayport, a mini displayport to displayport cable would work no problem.

Everything said by me is my humble opinion and nothing more, unless otherwise stated.

Thanks for the explanation :)
