If I buy a physical copy of a game, do I just install it and use the key and then put the disc on a shelf or do I have to have the disc in the Optical Drive while playing it?

 

Sorry, I've never bought a physical copy of a PC game and my download speed sucks so it would probably be easier/faster to get a physical copy.

Most new games do not require the CD to be in the Optical Drive while you play the game.

Nah, should not be the case, just install and leave in on the shelf forever.
