Internet ping issues

Hey guys! I've been searching everywhere for an issue and well hopefully this is the LAST place i need to go for help.

 

Recently my internet ping will skyrocket from 50-68 ms on average up to 2,000+ and it recently capped out at 8,000-9,000. This has only been recent - within the last 2 weeks I believe. At first I believed it was my router but I ended up testing out two different routers and none of them seemed to solve the issue. I have called my provider (charter) and asked them to send a technician out and he came out and we ran a few tests like the usual and he even ran an EQA for the past 2weeks and couldn't find a single thing. Luckily he's a good friend of my buddy so he gave me his number just in case i have more issues i can text him so he can take a quick look at it, the unfortunate part is everytime i've told him it's happening he will check it and nothing is showing up at all. Currently i'm running a program called meta-ping so i can monitor my spikes and keep track of it but that does nothing to solve the issue.

 

After all these troubles I come to you guys for help, if you need more information I can post it and I will deeply appreciate any support given. Thanks!

First off, close meta-ping. It is making it worse.
Second, get your ISP to check the cables going in and out of the building, as well as houses nearby. If more houses than you have this issue, they are going to have to replace cables and that is going to suck. but yeah, get them to check other people houses, and the cables themselves (on the powerline or underground, however they have them).

I haven't had metaping open very long, it was just to pinpoint how much I was getting and when it was happening to try and find out what the cause was. I'll call them up tomorrow and see if they can come and check the lines.

It is very possible the lines are damaged/old/next to an open current and can't handle the loads without high high ping. Let me know what happens after they check the cables.

Alright, the guy I was talking to told me to try to plug my computer in straight to the modem and from my tests it works perfectly fine with no issue. As soon as i plug my router back in it goes crazy again. I'm stuck right now to be honest, should I try getting a higher bandwidth router or what? Because it's only been the past two weeks and before that it was fine with no change in how many people accessing the router and how much it is being used.

it sounds like your router is messing something up. (duhh)

 

Try a few different routers. I don't know much about networking but it might be that your modem and router are not compatible. are you by any chance using a gateway, rather than a modem?

I'm just using a modem given to me by Charter. My internet was fine until about 12am today, thats when other people wake up in my house and start using the internet (No more than 2 other devices) But This is the same router and same internet plan i've been on for months and nothing about that has changed.

We tested it so when my sister is on my ping skyrockets randomly to up to 4,000 or more, when she logs off of her laptop everything is fine and it returns to normal. She apparently hasn't changed anything and everything has been the same for the past 4-5 months yet this problem only started 3 weeks ago.

then she has a virus on her laptop that is using your bandwidth.

Follow those steps on her laptop and let me know if it still happens.
