I need to build a computer for my parents' everyday usage. It is a budget build, but it can't be Celeron / Pentium / AM1 / A4 / A6 cheap.

So far I've narrowed it down to two builds that barely slip in under $500 CAD:

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/tabascosauz/saved/MxMwrH

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/tabascosauz/saved/ZhNv6h

The i3 build will be easier to build in because of the 200R and has a arguably better PSU, but the FX provides a better board and better multithreaded performance. I really don't wish to have to upgrade this time and time again because either the H81 board failed or the Antec PSU died. So should I go FX6300 or i3-4130?

The GT 640 is what I have right now, I'll give it to them when it's built because i'll have a R9 280 incoming but I had to insert a placeholder in PCPartpicker. A cheaper 760G board for the FX build is not acceptable because I want this build to last for a decently long time, and the 970 is the lowest I can go.

budget limit $500, after 12% sales tax on everything

The i3 build is definitely better.

+1

I really wish that we'd just make organic hardware already, that grows and adapts to the demands it needs to meet. That way, grannies' computers can be floppy sacks of organicness and the 12 year old Minecrafters will look like the guys that only do bicep curls, and the nerdy programmers will finally have justice, with their body-builder rigs that skipped leg day.

Why not get a A10, the build is for work not gaming so the extra horsepower is not needed.

SSD is not necessary, 8gb ram is

With the gpu you have cuda and it benefits the overall performance

Thanks, but I don't think I was very clear about this build.

My parents don't need anything more than HD 4600; I am going to give them my GT 640 if I go with the FX 6300 because it doesn't have an iGPU. My GT 640 GDDR5 OEM is pretty much a GTX 650.

I also need to take into account 12% tax here. It's OK, i clicked the partlists and the i3-4150 / MX100 build is the closest at just over $500 after taxes. The 750 Ti build is way too expensive at $630, X4 760K produces too much heat, and A10 is unnecessary costs.

SSD is nice to have for dailt usage. 8GB is not nessacry for everyday use. The GPU will not make different when using things like Chrome.

You are thinking of this like it is for gaming, but it is not. It is for some using it daily not gaming. So the SSD will make more of a difference than the 8GB of RAM.

I would get the i3, 4GB of RAM and the SSD for everyday use. The SSD will make all the difference.

Are you sure about the 4GB RAM? My experience with the XPS 8500 and my SSD 530 is that 4GB causes a pretty big slowdown.

Why does everyone think the i3 build is better? Not trying to be an AMD fanboy here, I'm just wondering because I thought the FX 6300's multithreaded performance is better than the i3 and its single threaded is not that bad?

The    purpose of the build is every day simple use? (like office and watching videos?)

Yes and also stuff like Caseware Working Papers and Quickbooks. I forgot to mention that I'd also like it to be capable of BF3 on low as a secondary function, but i think my GT 640 will take care of that so that's not important.

yes the fx-6300 is more than enough 4 or 8 gb of ram and a caviar blue.... if you want a ssd buy a small capacity and just put your windows..... (about battlefield 3 with the gt 640 you wont play it on ultra.... i guess medium with a decent amount of fps

I am using 4GB of RAM on my laptop with an i5 and a HDD. I haven't had a problem running windows with the 4GB of RAM. Also the i3 is more predictable as to what it would do. Also better single threaded performance would be better in most tasks.

What about this http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/NnnCFT

I left it at 8GB though because I don't want to have to scour the DDR4 market for DDR3 in a year or two just because it didn't prove to be enough

I would get this instead because SSD and slightly faster CPU.
