So I've been wanting to setup a home server with some extra pc parts, and I've finished the hardware part, but I am stuck on what software to use.

This is the hardware:

  • 2x 250gb hdd
  • 1x 640gb hdd
  • Amd athlon 64 x2 cpu
  • 4gb of ddr2 ram
  • random onboard gpu
  • disk drive

I want to make is so I can store movies and music and stream them to my tv through dlna and chromecast, store files for school using samba, use iscsi to mount a disk drive to my computer, and host a teamspeak server for me and my friends to use instead of skype. I've contemplated using linux and setting up a btrfs volume so the hdd's show up as one volume, and then installing software from there. I was wondering if there was any better way to achieve this.

You can just set it up on Ubuntu or Debian server, Debian is much more stable but Ubuntu is easier to set up etc.

The choice is yours, for programs or details you should just look around the internet or post your issues/questions on a linux-oriented forum.
