Hey guys, I need your help on this one.

Since the begging of the the summer I have slowly been gathering the components necessary to build a mid-range gaming/editing build. I have been planning and wanting one for 2+ years now as I want to begin a side hobby as a YouTuber, while I am finishing my senior year.

So far I have I must have spent 150+ hours researching, watching videos, and keeping track of the parts I have had my eyes on. I recently hit the "mother of all walls" when trying to decide on my choice of CPU...

I know for a fact that I want an Intel processor because I have run into multiple problems with AMD builds. NOW HOLD YOUR HORSES AMD FAN BOYS! I'm not trying to badmouth the processor in anyway, shape, or form. I am seeking people with a higher knowledge on the subject in hopes I can come to a formidable solution... Please keep all extremely bias opinions aside so a proper discussion can take place.

When designing my build I originally chose an i7-3770k seeing as I could get it for $209 and the performance for both gaming and editing were nice! I didn't want to limit myself with an i5, just in the fact that I plan on editing just as much as gaming. Where the aspects of and i7 with multi-threading would be a great bonus for the great deal of editing.

This is where the wall comes in... With the recent release of the i7-4790k in the next few days, I no longer know what I would gain from the extra $100+ dollars I would spend as to the extra cores and .5GHz. Including the fact that the price of the build would change drastically... I was also considering the i7-4770k as an option too, so please keep the fact that I will not only be gaming but editing in mind when helping out.

The reason I need to keep budget in mind is because with a part time job and a full time student I need to be 100% sure when purchasing the components.

The parts I had planned on buying:

CPU >i7-3770k

Motherboard >ASRock z77 Extreme 4

GPU >EVGA gtx 760 super clocked

RAM >Corsair Vengeance Pro (2 x 8) (purchased $135)

PSU > Corsair CX600M (purchased $44)

SSD > re purposed Fujitsu 120GB x2 raid 0 (plan on upgrading later)

HHD > Western Digital Caviar Blue (plan on upgrading to a WD Black)

Case > Cooler Master Storm enforcer (purchased $59)

Disc drive > re purposed asus DVD drive

Also keep in mind I will buy fans and a CPU cooler later on.

Any help is welcomed!!

What do you mean "extra cores?" Both processors have 4 cores and 8 threads. The 4790k just overclocks better.

Anyway, I do find it a bit odd that you're using a 3rd gen intel processor, because 4th gen has been out for a while. The performance increase will be negligible, anyway.

Also, have you bought any parts yet? If not, what's your budget, and what is the use for the system. I'm pretty sure you can do much better...

Build: CPU: Intel Core i5 4690k | CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 Evo | Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5 | RAM: 8GB G-Skill Ares 1600Mhz CL9 | Storage: 120GB Samsung 840 Evo + WD Blue 1TB 64MB Cache + Seagate Barracuda 2TB 64MB Cache | GPU: MSI GTX 960 | Case: Cooler Master Storm Enforcer | Power Supply: EVGA 600B Non-Modular |
