Hi guys!

I'd like to build a killer machine:
- 2x high-end GPU in SLI/CF
- High-end CPU
- Custom liquid cooling
- etc

But I've read that one should wait right now (Maxwell GPU's and Broadwell CPU's) on multiple places.
So my current plan is to buy an extendible PC, ready for Maxwell SLI, Broadwell CPU & Custom watercooling next summer.

- CSE: Enthoo Primo Case
- CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 *
- PSU: AX1500i AX860i
- GPU: Asus Radeon R9 290 *
- RAM: Kingston HyperX Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1600
- SSD: Crucial MX100, 512 GB SSD

Components marked with asterisk (*) will be replaced next year.

All I need now is a Z97 Motherboard (EATX or ATX).
I can't really decide on a motherboard, I prefer a HQ one that is (completely black (end product will feature black&white scheme) I've been looking at many articles but

So my question is:
- Is this a good idea? X No but I'm going to do it anyway
- Will my selected components work with a better CPU & GPUs next year, do you recommend any alternatives? X PSU was overkill
- What is a good (black) motherboard? (Max 300 EURO, 400 USD).

Thanks so much guys.

you DO NOT NEED A 1500W PSU EVER
750w would be more then enough for sli or crossfire at most 850w

also good black motherboards i would look at a asus z97 sabertooth mark 1 or msi z97 mpower however it dose have yellow highlights

Specs

CPU: i5 4670k i won the silicon lottery Cooler: Corsair H100i w/ 2x Corsair SP120 quiet editions Mobo: ASUS Z97 SABERTOOTH MARK 1 Ram: Corsair Platnums 16gb (4x4gb) Storage: Samsun 840 evo 256gb and random hard drives GPU: EVGA acx 2.0 gtx 980 PSU: Corsair RM 850w Case: Fractal Arc Midi R2 windowed

Price difference between PSU's wasn't that big. I just wanted to be sure I had enough power.

I also read somewhere that having more wattage in your PSU than required provided longevity.

But, I guess you're right as that last point is pretty vague.

The MSI Z97 boards are all pretty dark. Even the GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-Gaming G1 "BLACK EDITION" looks grey due to the PCB.

EVGA Z97 Classified looks pretty kickass too, but I don't see them mentioned a lot, not a popular mobo brand I guess.

Both of these are E-ATX, which probably looks better in a big case?

I personally would build a killer system now or just wait, I see it as a waste of money.  But if you want to build now and upgrade later, then I wouldn't buy an R9 290, go for something a little cheaper like a GTX 760/770, or R9 270X/280X, no need to buy a high-end GPU if you're going to replace it in less than a year.  Again my opinion.

Also, correct me if i'm wrong, but seeing as you have included a 1500W PSU, I'm assuming that you're new with regards to building PC's.  If tat is the case are you sure you want custom liquid cooling,  I've been building PC's for about 8-9 years, and I still haven't done a custom water cooled rig, partly because i'm worried something will go wrong, but mainly because it can be a lot of work, and expensive.  I prefer air cooling though, but have used some AIO liquid coolers in the past.  Also if you want a liquid cooled GPU, have you looked at the NZXT Kraken G10?

As for your Motherboard, ASUS Z97 Sabertooth, or if you can handle a bit of red, ASUS ROG Hero/Ranger or MSI Gaming series.

not entirely true about the lifespand. you can run a single 780 on 550w just fine and the recommenced is 650w what it all comes down to is how you take care of it (temperatures, dust over clock etc) and as long as its getting the power from a good quality psu your fine

Ah I see!

Now I'm not a complete noob, I've done a couple of high-end builds before but I thought I would just invest in this 1 PSU and keep it, well, forever.

The 290 seems fine to me as its just able to get 60FPS on High/Ultra GFX on 1080P (upgrade will deliver 4k).

PS. I'm a huge snob.

its fine we all were :P

if you want to invest on one psu forever get one of higher end brands (xfx corsair etcs) 850w psu most of their top end stuff like corsaors ax series come with a huge warranty

Nothing going to last forever for various reason :P There's a reason why the warranty ends after a certain amount of times for all company and those with higher time is more expensive :3

Linus did a video on this, too big of a PSU might even hurt your PC, so I'd stick with a ~750-800W PSu instead, something with a 80+ Gold from Corsair should be good.

Why 290 though? why not 290x?

Because the 290 seems to provide 60FPS for all the games that I want to play (I haven't played any high-end games for 2 years), and I'm only using it for 1 year (Don't worry, its not going into the trash).

I'm picking an AMD because I've never had anything but NVIDIA and this is the perfect time to try something new.

If you want to do something like what you said about your power supply, I would get a 900 watt or so corsair ax series or something of that sort. I went with the AX1200 only because I had plans to go dual cpu in the future, and here in the coming months, I will be. But even then, three GPUs and two 6 core Xeons will still only be 1,100 watts though, so you don't need 1,500 of them. But, if you want to have a very long lasting PSU, then go with a 900ish watt Corsair unit.
AX860i it is then! Thanks

Last thing is a motherboard

Why are all these motherboards so ugly ? :(

Only using it for 1 year @@? Why would you do that and what are you going to do with it then?

Replace it with 2 Maxwell GPU's (I guess the equivalent of a 780 Ti) and add custom water cooling loop.

The 290 will go into a steambox.

Steambox... well I guess that's an option. but wont we have fully functional in-home-streaming by then :3?
