CS:GO Question

Hi guys. 

So this is a really stupid question......

When joining a CS:GO community server, and it says you're downloading stuff in the bottom, are you really downloading stuff onto your computer?

Also, if you are, couldn't the host of the server put a virus in the file and it'd be stuck in your computer? 

I'm just really scared of viruses and I don't like to take my chances.

Downloading viruses from community servers is possible so play on only trusted servers.

They are not really saved like forever, the files, they are saved in cache files inside steam folder
