So, I want to build a home server that is.. overkill or a bit less than overkill. I mainly want CPU power and lots of memory. Whaler's folding rig comes to mind, but thats too much for me. If I recall, he had to drill his mobo? That's too far for me. You may not consider 1000 dollars at most overkill for a home server, but.. for me.. idk. I wouldn't really need a lot of storage.. just a 3TB drive. Maybe an SSD for the OS... maybe. Not sure on that one...

It would run some linux server os (probably ubuntu, my preference). I would host a gitlab server, a jenkins server, a teamspeak server, and (not all the time) a modded minecraft server. Obviously, the cheaper the better, but I don't want to settle for less. I want "the best but no better", if you know what I mean.

Obviously, more cores/cpu's would be great. Between linux, gitlab, jenkins, and teamspeak and a modded minecraft server with a parallel gc... that will add up. I also want to leave room to ad d more servers on to it later, another reason to go a little overboard.

I don't really want to have to do any abnormal assembly steps. It should be as easy as building a normal computer, no drilling or anything else. If there is anything like that it better not be on the expensive stuff :P

Let me know what you guys think... there's obviously a lot of different approaches to this so the more options the better. Thanks! :D

Do you want a GPU or do you want to run of intergrated graphics?

Is there any socket preference?

Intel i5-4670K, Asus Maximus VII (z97), 16gb Kingston, Asus Gtx 780, Fractal Design Define Mini, 250Gb Samsung Evo, Corsair CS650M

Dont need graphics, will SHA into it. Honestly, i'm not the one to decide on a socket. I don't know enough about the advantages of the different ones. TBH, I would prefer an Intel processor, but as far as socket goes... whatever gets me the highest stock CPU performance.

Something like this would be alright, But Ask around, I am not very experienced and asking people that know is the easiest way to learn.

This is also relatively small, if you want to be able to get 32 gbs of ram go with Micro Atx form factor, I could redo this build so you can have more RAM aswell

Wow, that is like.. exactly what I asked for :D

Considering I won't be buying this for a .. while.. if anyone else can beat that or wants to try, go for it.

I think 32GB of ram will do.. and its a quad core at 3.5GHZ .. I like it.

To get 32 gb of RAM you will need a bigger form factor as Mini Itx Doesn't accommodate more that 16 gb of Ram

So here is a build that does

CPU:  Intel Xeon E3-1275 V3 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($344.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard:  Asus B85M-G Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($74.99 @ Amazon)
Memory:  G.Skill Value 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($139.99 @ Newegg)

Storage:  Crucial M500 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($69.99 @ Amazon)
