freeNas data solution

extremescouter

I have been thinking about creating a large raid array to house backups and storage of both Windows and Mac computers. Would freeNas be a good solution, or would windows home server also work? Linus always talks about how hardware raid is so much better than software, but would software raid work for my purposes? I dont really have the budget for a $500+ raid card right now, and would like to essentially create a cheap home server that I can access anywhere.

Thanks.

Hardware raid is better for the things Linus uses his server for (iSCSI connection to editing machines with 10Gbps data links)

But for backups and media i prefer software raid, i would recommend FlexRAID
