I’m looking for input for my son’s computer upgrade.

Current specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

MSI B550-A motherboard

GeForce RTX 3060 Ti

2x 32mb Corsair 3600 C18 RAM

my sons 18 birthday is next month and we are thinking of upgrading his GPU as a surprise. I was looking at a 5080 but wasn’t sure if we should worry about upgrading other components first. I know he would need a new PSU as well. I also need to check his case to make sure the new GPU would fit.

Additionally based on some recent message board scanning it looks like a 5070 could be an option as well for not as much money. Still a nice upgrade without over doing it.

As a kid he always wants the new and best shiny thing but he is good about waiting. I’ve also let him know that he should really upgrade when he is bottlenecked on what he wants to play. I don’t think he there yet, this would just be a nice gift for his birthday.

Thanks for any help and input.

What resolution does he play at, do you know?

A 5070 would be a huge upgrade over the 3060 Ti at any resolution without going as crazy as a 5080.

A 5070 also draws less power so you might get away with the current PSU, do you know the model and wattage?

Here is a 16 game average at 1440p with high/ultra settings used.

The Ryzen 5600x might be a limiting factor in a few games but at 1440p its really not that bad in terms of a CPU bottleneck.

As you can see, a 5070 is a good upgrade over even a 4060 Ti.

What PSU does he currently have?

IMO the 5080 is a bad deal in terms of price-to-performance. The 5070 is good, but I would also consider the 9070/9070 XT unless he is really invested in having Nvidia. The 9070 and XT have more VRAM and also would have less of an issue with getting bottlenecked by the CPU, since AMD's GPU drivers require less CPU overhead to run.

Thanks for any help and input.

I'd lean more to the 5070TI and 9070XT as a peak to shoot for, without going into spending a lot for not much more (5080) or you should have bought him a car instead (5090).

Obviously without knowing the resolution... he may need a new monitor as well (rad:  1440p UW is LIFE!!!).

Also, there are custom keyboards and mice as well as audio solutions to look into if you want to spend more money and round out the experience.

Thanks. I’ll have to check his PSU this weekend. I know he isn’t playing above 1440p, actually that had skipped my mind. The info is helpfully.

Thanks , he is not married to Nvidia. I’ll have to look at the 9070.

Thanks. A monitor is a good idea as well, but will definitely look at the 9070xt
