I used PIA for many years, but recently switched to Mullvad mostly due to the ownership off PIA.

I found the video below really informative about the different VPN's. It's timestamped where it mentioned the ownership of PIA but the entire video is worth a watch

I also recently dumped PIA after many years. I got one month of AirVPN to see how that goes, but might switch to Mullvad after that is up. So far I like AirVPN. Their app for Android is a little clunky and dated UI, but it works. Windows client is also clunky and took a minute to sort out. But they, and many other providers, have Wireguard config files readily available. I'm using an Asus router, so I can upload a Wireguard config straight to it and pick and choose what devices use the VPN on a router level. No need for clients on any of my devices when at home.

Seems I should cancel my PIA plan and move to maybe proton. mostly because of the price. Mullvard would be fine as well but unsure if there is any way to get a discount on it.

It seems like Mullvad is focusing on delivering a robust and trustworthy solution over marketing strategies. Which I find as a good thing.

I am currently paid for just a month on Mullvad to try it out, but are also considering Proton down the line. It will be mostly for their email and cloud services, but as the VPN is included in their package, it makes for a enticing offer.

from what I have seen around Mullvad comes up often as the recommended vpn. It would be about $8 CAD for me which is near 3 times what I pay with PIA. Proton would be slightly more then my PIA with there current black friday promo. I would be fine without the plus version.
From what I have read Proton might be slightly slower on speeds then Mullvad. PIA isnt great anyways so I dont expect much of a drop if any.

Anything wrong with Surfshark? Comes with a pretty nice antivirus as well.

Edit: ah, I see - some trackers: AppsFlyer, Google Crashlytics, Google Firebase Analytics. But if I read the web right, all these trackers are mainly about the app's usage/analytics, based on your already registered profile and what you "agreed" to. Adding the last 3rd-party audit from June 10, which confirmed that there is no logging of internet activity or any related identifiable info, it is fair to assume that all the data Surfshark records is your engagement with the product/app itself, not the encrypted stuff you engage with on the web.

Oh, and those get blocked in the browser anyway (ubLite, yes?).
