codec problems?

Hello. I have a buddy who has trouble with the image when to play a DVD, but the sound is coming. It does not matter if he puts in the DVD player or plays it of the HDD, I suggested a broken codec pack, can this be true? and it happens even if he uses Window Media Player or VLC and this began for a couple of days ago.

ive had instances where i can surprisingly run a MP4 in windows media player but not VLC and vice versa so anything can be possible...
