Good afternoon everyone. I currently have TrueNAS Core with 4 x 4TB in a RAID Z2 configuration with regular snapshots. My current backups for the NAS are a 4TB external hard drive in our safe at home and another 4TB external hard drive in the safe at the bank. We back them up periodically and swap them out.

I’m ready now to build an offsite backup with an upgrade at the same time. I’m going to upgrade to Scale and both systems will end up with 8 x 4TB hard drives. For context, I use WD Red Plus drives.

My question is, is RAID Z1 appropriate for both of the systems or should they be RAID Z2?

How important is uptime to you? Is it mission critical if you take the nas offline to replace a drive or restore from backup?

WD Red Plus

If that's all you use, you're in for trouble. Buying these drives together means they're from the same batch. If that batch has an issue, you'll loose data really fast. Best spread your purchases over different manufacturers.

Any recommendations? I prefer 5400rpm. I had 7200 before and they were very loud when they were doing reads or writes.

WD Ultrastar and Seagate Exos are some brands I've purchased. Mind, these are refurbished enterprise drives. Also, WD Red is not bad at all, just don't populate all bays with the same brand/type. (the drives I mentioned are 7200rpm, but that doesn't bother me as my NAS is not in my bedroom 😉 )
