What monitor do you have? HDR on pretty much all monitors except OLEDs is no more than a gimmick and a lie. You need high peak brightness and OLED levels of control over contrast for HDR to look good. If it's not an OLED, just keep your HDR off and assume your monitor doesn't support it.

Your SDR calibration is probably extremely messed up, you're just used to it and consider it "natural". HDR is usually properly calibrated, so it might look dull compared to uncalibrated SDR.
