Hello there guys,

I would like to ask you, if it does make any sense to first upgrade the PSU before even going on with upgrading the rest of the system later.

See I had bought myself a prebuilt like three years ago or so (though I do have an experience building computers somewhat, my PC before was fully custom self-made) - specifically this one - HP OMEN. I bought it with a bonus from my work for mere 320 eur when it was new at like 800+ or so, so it was a good cheap as heck and big upgrade for over the last custom PC (my latest PC had 4770k and 1060 6GB).

I must say that I am still very much so happy with the performance of the PC since I only play older games and Diablo 2 Resurrected at best - tho I play at 4k/60hz panel right now.

Now that I am slowly thinking about getting some upgrades in say few years worth (like 1 thing upgraded per year or something) but obviously this prebuild does not have good high wattage PSU with newer cables like 12VHPR or whatever it is called.

So I have been thinking, that good, thoroughly reviewed and highly praised PSUs usually last like easily 10 to maybe even more years right?

So the train of though was that I'd upgrade the PSU for something way better (did not do the research yet, but I suppose fully modular, semi - passive cooling 1000W or something around that) hoping, that the next year I can get some good GPU or Mobo+CPU+RAM upgrade, I wouldn't have to worry about also having to save up for new PSU which can be costly as I seem to remember for the good units.

So what do you think?

Is it fine approach to first upgrade the PSU in my prebuilt and in say 2 years worth upgrade the rest of the system or should I get new PSU only when I have saved up enough to buy everything at once? Do nowadays PSU even "age",  as in not being compatible a problem anymore?

Thank you all for reading that wall of text above and for your opinions!

Well depends on what upgrade you're planning, you'll need a better than 500W PSU for any GPU requiring more than 250ish watts indeed

For good reliable PSU look at PSU Cultists tier list and Cybenetics reviews/tests

Usually at 1000W+ Gold and above PSUs from reputable brands (Corsair, BQ, Phanteks, NZXT, Thermaltake..) are good units with long warranty, but are significantly more expensive than 750-850W units, so you may wait until you're sure about your future GPU to replace the PSU

Well I do know, that the CPU+Mobo+RAM will be some high end 3DX chips and 32 gig of ram and the gpu upgrade would be at around the current xx80 levels.

Ok then you need at least a 850W PSU, I'm using a Corsair RMx850 on a 7950X3D/7900XTX with no issue
