Hello. I've just finished a spare salvage build but it does not post. I used a Gigabyte B250M D2V motherboard, some 16gb DDR4 2400mhz RAM, a 1050 GPU and a 650w power supply from my old build (at this point they have been in my wardrobe in a dust and static free bag for a year or two). The only "new" part is an i7 7700 CPU in a "tested & working" condition. The other parts were working perfectly last time I've used them

The PC doesn't post. It turns on and the RGB (just the 3 case fans are RGB) just flashes for a second and turns off. All fans continue to spin (3 case fans, CPU fan, GPU fan, PSU fan) and they keyboard is lit up. There system doesn't post though. First boot the PC restarted a few times but it didn't go anywhere.

I've tried remounting all components, tested all video outputs (including VGA on the MoBo w/o GPU installed), typical testing with just 1 RAM stick etc, no post.

There is a weird clue though. On one occassion I forgot to plug in the 8pin CPU power and the RGB never turned off for the fans. However the keyboard did not light up at all and obviously no post.

Please help me! What else can I try before I take this PC to the shop or start ordering parts?

Heya!

How long did you wait until you called it a no-post and do you have another system you can test the CPU in or another known good CPU to put in the system.
It sounds very odd that when you don't plug in the 8pin CPU power, the RGB stays on. The first thing I would try is unplugging all the RGB headers and then trying again, and checking the power connection from the PSU to the motherboard.

What you can also try is unplugging all peripherals from the computer completely, damaged peripherals can stop a motherboard from posting.
You may need to update the BIOS on the motherboard for it to support the i7 7700, however that requires a CPU that the motherboard's BIOS version can support.

Hey, thanks for your reply.

1. I've waited over 5 minutes before calling it

2. I don't have another compatible system or CPU to check

3. There are no RGB power headers. The fans are non PWM fans linked together and connected into one slot on the motherboard. One of them has SATA power. Without SATA power plugged in the fans don't work at all

4. I've reseated components and cables alike multiple times by this point. I'm not plugging in any peripherals

5. The mobo is supposed to support the CPU out of the box. I used 7600 with up until like 2 years ago and it worked perfectly

I assume you have tried with no fans connected too.. do you have a TV or another monitor to ensure that the system is not posting.

The issue decided to fix itself overnight. It worked first thing in the morning. Gotta love PC building sometimes.

The RGB on the fans only lights up for a second when turning on the PC and never again though 😞

They might need to be setup? I'm not too familiar with RGB but maybe there's a software suite that you can use to see if they're detected or maybe a remote. It may be that the RGB is disabled on the fans and only turns on for the first 5 or so seconds before it realises? Not entirely sure but try looking around for a remote you might have or try installing some RGB software.
