Tired if having all of my files scattered across a bunch of hard drives that aren’t even currently in a PC. This won’t have an assured amount of storage but enough for me to have breathing room when backing everything up.  Everything is redundant. Bought all of my drives in pairs just to make sure if one failed, my info would be safe on the other.

Specs:

CPU: i5 4440

Mobo: Acer board Putnam old Veriton. It was the only board I had on hand that had more than 4 sata plugs

Memory: 8gb of cheap off brand. Not sure if the speed and don’t feel like looking. Will work for now.
GPU: GT 1030
Storage: 2x Seagate Barracuda 4tb 3.5in HDD’s, 2x Seagate Barracuda 2tb 3.5in HDD’s and 2x Western Digital Blue 2tb 2.5in HDD’s.
Case: Phankeks Enthoo Pro 2

PSU: Phanteks Revolt X 1200x modular.

Everything but the HDD’s is just parts I had on hand. Will upgrade as needed.

And on to the build pics…..

Motherboard in place.

Probably should have dusted it out before I started 😂

More to come as I build…

Really exciting!! If you're not planning on running any services that need a GPU, then you could save on your monthly power bill by leaving the GTX1030 out of the build. TrueNAS should be just as happy with the intel iGPU on that 4400, but if you are planning on running any sort of media streaming service, in my experience the 4th gen iGPU is fine up through 1080p, but transcoding to lower resolutions / 4k can be tough. Good luck and have fun! 😄

I’m actually running windows on this and since it’s going to be setting kind of close to my man cave tv, I was going to us it to run some emulators as well. So the GPU is kind of necessary. Even though it’s not much of a GPU.

One of the biggest issues is that I have to boot off one of my storage drives until I get a better motherboard since all the sata plugs are used and there is no pcie storage option.

I have the same case with a EPYC server in it, weird seeing the same case with such old HW in it haha

Just want to say, most consumer HDDs are only designed to be ran in pairs, the vibration kills them, NAS drives are your friend here. BUT, it depends how important the data is, if you have a complete cloud backup of the data, it doesn't matter as much

If someone has helped you out on the forum don't forget to give them a reaction to say thank you!

Everything will be backed up offsite as well. Right now I’m just working with what my wallet allows. The old hardware (mobo, cpu and ram) will be replaced over time.  I’m just using what I have on hand for the time being.

edit.. I just realized this POS board has no usb 3 plug. Looks like I’ll be upgrading sooner rather than later. Any recommendations on a cheap AM4 motherboard that has at least 6 sata plugs (or is 4 pretty much the limit now days?).
