Windows 11 File explorer Causing odd issues

Go to solution Solved by esCaPade1,

A little bit, yes, but if there is indeed a bug in Windows, only Microsoft will be able to address it. Assuming that that is the issue, of course - you will likely only find out by contacting Microsoft support.

So I have discovered a new issue just started that if i right click on My Documents drive a separate 2tb ssd with everything moved to this drive. Pictures music etc. The pc will freeze the file explorer. It wont crash or report a problem the circle just spins. Pc continues to work but file explorer refuses to do anything until I 3 finger and restart it. All Other drives and folders work fine.

I have tested the drive crystal disk says it fine.

I can access it ok move files use files etc no issues but right click kills it.

I have tried from various google sites.

Restart Explorer: Open Task Manager, right-click Windows Explorer, and choose Restart.

Clear Cache: Go to File Explorer Options, click Clear under Clear File Explorer history.

Run SFC: Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run sfc /scannow.

Disable Quick Access: Set Open File Explorer to: This PC in File Explorer Options.

Check Updates: Ensure Windows is up to date in Settings > Windows Update

I have changed the sata cable and sata port. That didnt help

Safe mode does the same so its not something i added i guess.

At a loss any ideas

Ty in advance for any help. BTW I really hate windows 11 and regret the downgrading.

Clever buggers will be along later to help until then ya stuck with me 🙂

Hi. Have a look in your Event Viewer at the System logs - if there are a bunch of Disk Error entries, the drive is likely borked.

Ok is there a particular section i should be looking at? Im not really shore about any of this so bare with please.

Try this https://www.hdsentinel.com/

It's better than crystaldisk and can also repair in many cases.

New Bitmap image (2).bmp

Update.

If i right click on the drive then explorer freezes as above.

New info

If i open it first left click once then right click on blank space in the window that opens i can select properties etc.

So it seems to be more a problem with the os than the drive. Some sort of short cut or bad link.

Yeah, you can get a USB-C 2.5" SATA caddy for pretty cheap.

Or, boot off a USB stick on the same machine into Linux to test to see if it is indeed the OS causing the issue.

Update. Linux worked fine no problems.

So tried creating a new user on a hunch. Yep it works fine with the new user. So its something screwy with my user files shortcut or a link. Only problem is I i swap users ill have to redo everything this will take a month if it works at alI I use vortex and mod alot of my games there is no backup......

So i need a way to restore or reset file links.................

Honestly Windows 10 was a pain at times but This..........Honestly i think MS make every other OS as crap as they can get away with so there next OS looks even better.

Yup, sure sounds like a MS issue.

Perhaps it is something to do with the fact that My Documents is a "special" folder. Does the drive operate normally if you move My Documents back to your C: drive? If so, it sounds like this needs to be reported to MS as a bug.

Fixed it. YEY DUMB LUCK. I unplugged the Hard drive to check it on a separate pc with a sata. Disk passed all good.

I booted my pc and a few windows bitching sessions later as none of the links existed anymore and some cleaning when i plugged the drive back in after a restart moved all the links to document drive it all works. No errors and and Acronis disk image made to save it.

Thanks everyone for you help wish i thought of this but ill take the win there few and far between.

Cant work out how to mark this a solved so if anyone can point me to the right button. 🙂
