That was one of my choices but my mom thinks I'm crazy...

Why, a good camera. I own one.

She thinks it is insane for me to buy a $500 camera. She is like, "Use the cameras we have at home!" The camera that I have now is literally a potato... and she's like have my old camera... (You have to put FILM in it) *Facepalm*

I feel like my phone could take just as good photos though...

Better photos and more control han a phone. Plus show your mom how you love the dlsr and get her to upgrade. )

But I want a little more than just phone quality...

My thought was show her the love with a crap then have her upgrade.

I have found my solution http://www.borrowlenses.com/product/Canon_T3i I can just rent it for a week and see if I like it and  if I do maybe I'll buy it.

But what is a good lens?

The kit and then a 55-250 are a good start. Then get some L-glass.

Could you give me a link, I'm kinda new to this camera stuff... lol

This is a good start.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Processor-Digital-55-250mm-Telephoto/dp/B005Z3DWOI

This next.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU

Now we get the expensive gear.

This.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-24-105mm-USM-Lens-Cameras/dp/B000AZ57M6/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1401771920&sr=1-3&keywords=ef+24-105mm+f%2F4+l+is

Then this.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-200mm-Lens-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000I1X3W8

Make sure to grab a few extras too.

http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Laptop-Backpack-Orange-interior/dp/B00CF5OGP8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401772023&sr=8-1&keywords=amazon+basics+bag

http://www.amazon.com/Wasabi-Power-Battery-2-Pack-Charger/dp/B004VTAVLE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1401772028&sr=8-3&keywords=battery+for+t3i

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-Class-Memory-SDSDXPA-032G-AFFP/dp/B007NDL56A/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1401772042&sr=1-4&keywords=32gb+class10+sd+card

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-7321YB-Tripod-3-Way-Head/dp/B001TK3EJY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1401772105&sr=8-2&keywords=manfrotto+tripod+and+head

This is a list of great gear. It is very expensive. Totals in the thousands of dollars. Get the Camera and extras first. Then the 50 mm prime then the other lenses when/if you can. When or if you outgrow the t3i get this.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-20-2-Digital-Camera-Pixel/dp/B00DMS0GTC/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1401772238&sr=1-1&keywords=eos+70d+canon

Hope I helped. :)
