I was wondering with how the market is with gpus should I wait and see if prices will go down and for more availability or should I just pull the trigger on a gpu

For right now wait unless you get a deal on a new one.

Its never a good time to buy a GPU, prices are always high.

If money is tight then wait for a deal but if you want a more modern card, you will be waiting a while until something is on sale.

Lets say you keep your GPU for 5 years, does it matter if a GPU is 550 dollars vs 630 dollars for example?

What is 80 bucks over 5 years?

Obviously, if money is super tight then its a different story.

If you want a GPU and you feel comfortable buying one, go get one.

What part of the market are you looking at? E.g. $1K+, $500, $200?

Where in the world are you?

Are you upgrading from something good that you're content with, or are you desperate?

Is your use case gaming only?

I’m a first time buyer in Canada I’m trying to get a 5080 or a 9070xt and both of those options are well over a $1000 Canadian and availability where I am is scarce so I’m just wondering if I should wait for a Black Friday or a Boxing Day or get something now?

Black Friday is 7 months away..  Lets say you could save 100-150 bucks on Black Friday on one of those GPU's.

I personally would like to have that GPU for 7 months and enjoy hundreds of hours of amazing gaming and graphics.

Which type of first time buyer?

  1. Have no PC and going to need to build a whole PC
  2. Have a PC and looking to upgrade the graphics card

If 1, look at whole computers on sale (Cyberpower that kind of places) as they can potentially offer better prices. If those prices are still bad, then wait for better market conditions before you start your PC gaming journey.

If 2, it all boils down to how badly you want the new graphics card now. We can only assume that you have an adequate CPU to drive the GPU of choice.

Keep an eye

There are a couple of listings on PCPartPicker for 9070xt. New stocks may pop up for lower prices, so maybe keep an eye out for those at a GPU stock tracker. MicroCenter had a deal on a 7900 XT, so keep an eye on those too.

That's comparing apples to oranges. Apples to apples would be RTX 5070 Ti / RX 9070 XT.

I don't understand pricing in Canada, but it looks like you can get a 9070 XT for around $700 (USD), is that right? If so, that's not bad (~$100 over priced, which is about average).

The 5080 looks like it is around $1200 (USD) minimum? If so, that's not terrible, but not great either (about $200 over priced).

If you're happy with the performance of the 9070 XT there's no point buying a 5080 that's some 70% more expensive for 20% more performance (at least, in raster), unless say... you're obsessed with upscaling, ray tracing or do stuff other than gaming that needs nvidia.

We really need more context here though, if you're a first time buyer, then how can you afford to wait months for Black Friday? What are you gaming on now?

The 9070 and 9070 XT are generally decent deals in the current market (perform well for the money, e.g. making 4K gaming obtainable for a not outrageous price), which is why they are popular, but is $700 for a 9070 XT a bargain? No, not at all. You'd have to buy something though if you don't even have a PC.
