I just purchased a pre-made After Effects project and am trying to make some edits. It says that some things will appear differently because I do not have Quicktime. Why is that? How do I make things appear as they should?

Also, when I open it says the project is being converted from 64 bit version, as if I only have the 32 bit version? What is that all about?

Most of the large Adobe applications (Photoshop, Illustrator. Premier, Aftereffects, etc) install a 32-bit and a 64-bit version of the application and they will show up in your start menu as "Adobe Photoshop" and "Adobe Photoshop (64-bit)." Make sure you're launching the correct one and if you do not have the 64-bit one run the installer again. This also applies to Creative Cloud which installs both.

About Photoshop but relevant in all instances: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/64-bit-os-benefits-limitations.html (TL;DR: reason for both being there breaks down to plugin compatibility, speed/stability, RAM usage, etc)

Quicktime is not just a player it is also a handful of codecs so something in the project (probably an mov file) needs the quicktime codec. I hate quicktime but if you're  doing video editing it's a necessary evil because it also adds support for additional export options in Premier.. Just install it; it will save you headache later: http://www.apple.com/ca/quicktime/

You can disable all of the "launch on start" crap it installs like Apple Updates in msconfig.

Well CC installed a 64-bit option for everything except After Effects. I can only find a 32 bit version. Thanks for explain the codec thing.

Oh shit, I though we were talking about Premier... yeah there's only one version of After Effects.. That error is weird then, have you Googled it or asked the person who provided the project file?
