So my friend messed up today. He bought a new AMD CPU and installed it without updating the BIOS. That means that CPU isn't supported yet and the PC doesn't work now. That wouldn't be a big problem if the old CPU wouldn't fall out of his hands and break some pins.

The motherboard unfortunately doesn't have the BIOS flashback function so I am guessing the only way is finding an old (1000-3000 series) ryzen CPU? Any other option I am not aware of?

Specs:

TUF B450 plus gaming

Old CPU: ryzen 7 3800X

New CPU: ryzen 5000 series (not sure which, but the motherboard supports it)

The earliest boards supported the Bristol Ridge CPUs, which were often the cheapest way to boot up the board, BUT, it is not really supported anymore and later BIOS abandon them, so I think 1st/2nd gen is the most sensible.

bend or break? if you're careful you can attempt to unbend the pins, with something thin like a credit card or something more precise than that

breaking away like the pins falling out would be worse, but that depends how the CPU looks now

A few of the pins fully broke off sadly.

I have a ryzen 5 2600 in my old PC. Can anything get messed up if I take it out, use it to update his BIOS and then put it back into my PC?

That shouldn't cause any problems as long as you're careful moving your CPU around, make sure you don't bend any pins!

(Quick reminder that AM4 CPUs sometimes stick to their CPU coolers, so be very careful removing your cooler!)

Yes, Your friend could drop your CPU also.

Personally, I wouldn't, your friend already broke one 😑

I'd try and get a 200GE, 1200, 1600, 2200G, 2300X, 3100 or something like that (whatever is cheapest!).

if there's no debris and others are straight there's a "chance" it might work, I don't know if it's always safe to drop a CPU in that's missing pins.

I am keeping my CPU safe. He found a 1600 for like 10€ so it's not too bad.
