Hi everyone,

I’m planning to build a home server primarily for running Proxmox, Home Assistant, and TrueNAS Scale for Jellyfin. I have an old PC that I’ve experimented with in the past, but this time I’d like to expand the storage and build something more robust, ideally in a rack-mount style for future upgrades.

I’m aiming for a build that’s not overly expensive, and I’m planning to incrementally upgrade over time. I was thinking of using a CPU with around 6-8 cores, but I’m unsure whether to go with server-grade hardware or a standard motherboard. I’m comfortable with building PCs and setting up software, but I need advice on what hardware to choose.

Specifically, I’m looking for recommendations on:

• Whether to build or buy a pre-built server (e.g., from eBay)

• Server-grade vs. standard PC hardware

• Recommended CPUs and other components

• Expected costs for a project like this

Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
