Thunderbolt and dedicated gpu

Is it possible to use an intel Z77 motherboard with a dedicated gpu but run the display over thunderbolt

Run it from your DP port on your videocard.

I don't why you want to do this. DisplayPort 1.2 already support 4K resolution at 12-bit colors at 60Hz, with error correction bits to ensure that the signal is perfect every frame.

What would thunderbolt give you over DisplayPort that you could possibly need?

All you are doing is adding a layer of processor on both sides (monitor and graphic card) which for sure creates additional input lag.

My friend is going to build a gaming PC, his mac just can't handle them, but he has a thunderbolt display and didn't want to have to buy another monitor.

Yes, he can, but it will add a bit more stress to the CPU, as others have said.
