I was scrolling on Threads when I stumbled upon an article from The Verge talking about how Pebble is back and open source.

Here's the article: The Pebble smartwatch is making a comeback

TL;DR - Pebble's founder wanted to create a new pebble. Before starting anything, he asked Google if they could open source the OS, and they did!

You can read more on Eric's blog post: Why We’re Bringing Pebble Back

Oh thats hella neat. Of all the smart watches that have been the pebbles understood the assignment the best. Be a COMPANION for the phone with handy simple controls for commonly used things. NOTHING MORE.

It also understood it was a WATCH you could have a week or more of battery life depending on what you did and it's got less battery capacity than your bluetooth earbuds which is insane to think if they just put in a bigger battery how long it could go for.

I like that the goal is to be pebble still just alive again and a bit more up to date. With newer hardware. Realistically not much has to be added or changed at all as as is the people at rebble have shown that these are fully functional smart watches in every way and that you don't need much processing power at all to do a lot if you just optimize.

Not a week after I dusted off my trusty Pebble Steel after my previous smart watch fizzled out?!? The hype is real but trying to remain realistic. Reading through his linked "Success and Failure at Pebble", looks like Eric is trying to "make good" on the unfortunate death of a great piece of tech and I hope it can make a comeback without too much fuss or scope creep. Sounding like a hardware update and maybe a software polish (at this point just getting an app back at easy access could be a big win). Hoping that if this actually gets off the ground they keep it pretty tight.

Do we think when he says this new take is going to be like Pebble "In almost every way." that's referring to the OG, Time, the 2?

I'd be over the moon for a Time clone: similar size, supported app comeback, buttons without that rubber membrane that failed well before my P2 was ready to sunset. I'd understand a few people wanting an HR monitor but it'll be a No from me. Step and sleep tracking were really all the data I wanted and never honestly needed.
