Getting into home servers

Hey 👋 

 

I've been thinking about trying out nextcloud with my truenas setup, or potentially port forwarding. 

I have a VPN (Nord (can't change it for a year)). 

 

My question is how risky is connecting things over the internet? And is this something I can play around with, and things won't go terribly wrong? 

Any other avenues I could go? Or advice?
