I'm in the US and have about 500GB of data with little expectation for that to grow a lot. Currently i just back up locally over 4 PCs distributed through the house. I use free file sync to update backups through the 1Gbit network. On the main PC I use a second SSD with automated backups hourly. I also use the "update" function to get some sort of versioning. The data we have are copies of documents, family pictures/videos and movies from DVDs and music files. I guess most could be restored if needed, or if a single picture becomes unusable, that isn't the biggest deal. Our Internet is 600 MBs up/down.

What this doesn't protect me from is:

- a whole house fire that literally destroys all drives

- Someone hacking into our system and planting virus or encrypting the data (like those blackmail things)

- bitflips

What would be nice to have (but not 100% necessary):

- Mobile access. I don't know if i need it... but i currently use the Free 15GB Google gives me to look up manuals on my phone when I'm in the garage.

- Separate access for each of the 3 family members to keep things separated.

- Still being able to do my home distributed backing up on local drives (since i don't trust an online provider 100%... like if there is a credit card issue, i still want my data even if the plan expires)

- Add a document from one computer, and then it shows up in my main PC. For example, if i work on my secondary PC (we have 2 desks) and i add a file, i like it to be changed or added on the main PC.

I found the following and would like to hear if one is better:

- One Drive at $$70 for single user (1TB) and $100 family (6TB). includes MS Office. I think it includes versioning.

- Backblaze at $99 (actually not sure about size provided). They don't seem to allow multiple users

- Google at $100 and 2TB

There are others.... cheaper and more expensive ones etc. For some reason it looks like OneDrive is the best deal. but is it the best for me?

Oh, and i thought of NAS, but that doesn't really resolve any of my problems i have with my current setup.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just circling back to this and wonder if anyone can advise?

without actual experience it looks like OneDrive is the best deal. But is it?

When i google, i can find people having issues with OneDrive. but I'm sure if I google any large provider, i will find complaints
