BSOD loop after BIOS update

Go to solution Solved by AlexGK,

**13900k seems to be dead after BIOS update 😕

I'm in a bit of a predicament following yesterdays post about a failed BIOS update, I can now only get into Windows in safe mode, otherwise stuck in a BSOD boot loop.  I did revert to the previous BIOS version I was on, but the BSOD loop continues, so I am back on the latest revision.

Things I've tried so far:

  • Uninstalled a number of programs
  • Disabled anything set to start on startup
  • Disabled a number of services that I didn't need to run on startup

I thought that maybe I could just reinstall and that would be the end of it, but the clean, up-to-date Windows 11 install media bluescreens as soon as it loads as well...

  • OS - Windows 11 x64
  • MB - ASUS ROG STRIX B660-I GAMING WIFI
  • BIOS -  v3601 (latest) (no OC settings, all stock/default)
  • CPU - Intel Core i9-13900K
  • RAM - CORSAIR Vengeance 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 5200 (PC5 41600)
  • GC - Intel Arc A770 Limited Edition 16GB
  • PSU - CORSAIR RM650 650 W ATX 80 PLUS GOLD

An update,

I've given up on trying to save the OS and am just trying to reinstall windows fresh.  I've tried on the latest BIOS, my previous BIOS version, and 2 older ones with no success.  The Windows 11 install media blue screens as soon as it loads.

Is there anything I am doing wrong? I don't remember having to do anything special to get Windows to install on previous builds.

Hold on, if you are able to get into Windows with Safe Mode, you MAY be able to recover the BIOS, still.

https://www.asus.com/ca-en/support/faq/1012219/

Windows 11 has a few UEFI requirements.

Since you have updated / downgraded / reverted the BIOS, some of those BIOS settings may be disabled (by default) and needs to be changed to Enabled.

In four of them it crashed because of issues with the registry. It's crashing on "CmpCheckKey" which verifies the structure of every key in the newly loaded hive (The registry is called a hive) in three of the registry error crashes. The last one was a crash because it found errors while cleaning up after a process.

So how this is is related to a botched BIOS update I have no idea. With no other context, I would read these as a corrupted Windows install.

Do you have a different storage drive you could try reinstalling to? And preferably completely remove the current storage before doing so.

Thanks to good NAS habbits, there is nothing on the drives of any importance.  I've also checked the BIOS settings related to Windows 11, and all are in order.

I also swapped out the nvme drive with one from another system, it doesn't help the Windows 11 installation immediately BSOD.

This system was running for more than a year before this without issue, so why a BIOS update borked everything I have no idea, the machine never had issues with power up/down prior.

I think I've come to the conclusion of it being either a MB or CPU issue.  I've stripped the system down to the bare minimum, and swapped out with multiple other part known to work.

I've noticed that the BIOS does crash frequently through this testing, so I'm putting my money on the MB
