Recently I’ve been trying to play games such as BO6 and STALKER 2, but my fps is all over the place and I’m not sure if it’s a GPU or CPU thing. I’m playing at 1440p but I don’t gain FPS if I go to 1080p.

i recently bought the 4060ti but Im thinking of returning it to get a RX 7800 XT but i don’t know if that’ll fix the problem or if the 4060ti is fine and the CPU’s time has come.

Spec:

intel i5 9600k overclocked 5ghz

Msi Z370 gaming plus

32gb 3200mhz DDR4

RTX 4060ti 8GB

In modern games like STALKER 2 the 9600k will struggle compared to more modern CPU's, especially in the 1% and 0.1% lows / Stutter.

The 9600k is going on 6 years now and was basically a souped up 6700k 14nm++

I upgraded from a 9900k @5.2ghz to a  7700x and saw a okay jump in max FPS but a massive jump in 1% and 0.1% lows with my RTX 4080.

So if I keep my 4060ti and go for something like a 5700x (or x3D) that would be a bigger performance upgrade?

A 5700X3D would be a nice bump in performance over the 9600k.

The extra cores and threads on the 5700X3D will surely be helpful in upcoming CPU heavy titles.

In some games its only by a few % but in others you can get double the framerate ( with a faster GPU of course )

If its worth an upgrade is entirely up to you.

Have a look through this one.  Its with a 3080 Ti GPU.

Focus on the green and blue numbers next to D3D12 in the top left corners.

The average framerate in some games is a lot higher with the 5700X3D.

Oh wow what difference! Even on the games where the average isn’t massively different the 1% and 0.1% are still significantly higher!

That’s a massive help thank you so much!

Yeah! It can be quite the difference in some games but the real gains is in the stutter / 1% and 0.1% lows for sure.

And if you plan on upgrading your GPU later you know that you have a fast enough CPU to pair it with 🙂

Yeah, you're almost certainly CPU limited. In general, if your GPU utilization is consistently under 90ish percent, and you don't have any sort of frame cap or V-sync in place, that means that you are probably being bottlenecked by the CPU.

This video is a must-watch that helps explain how to spot a CPU limitation:

"TV Gaming" PC: Ryzen 5 5600 :: 32GB DDR4-3200 :: RTX 2070 Super :: 500GB PCIe 3.0 SSD :: 1.5TB of SATA SSDs :: Windows 11

"Desk Gaming" PC: i5-4690K :: 16GB DDR3-1600 :: RX 560D 4GB :: 500GB SATA SSD :: Linux Mint 22

Office PC: Dell Pro 14 :: Ultra 7 268V :: 32GB DDR5-8533 :: 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe :: 6TB HDD :: Windows 11

Laptop: Dell Latitude 15.6" :: i5-4200U :: 8GB DDR3-1600 :: 500GB SATA SSD :: Linux Mint 22

Primary NAS: i5-7500 :: 16GB DDR4-2133 :: 250GB SSD :: 8TB HDD :: TrueNAS Scale 24.10

Web Server/Backup NAS: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B :: 2GB RAM :: 64GB microSD card :: 8TB HDD :: Raspberry Pi OS
