Hi guys,

I just got a Gigabyte R9 290 (Windforce Edition) and the temps I've been seeing seem a bit high. It's idling in the low 40s and hitting high 80s under full load (85 max on 15 min 1080p Furmark.) I was wondering if anyone with this card has seen similar numbers, since the benchmarks seem to indicate it should be running about 10 degrees cooler both at idle and under load. I know 290s run hot, but I'd expected better numbers from Windforce, since my 7870 maxed out at about 65 degrees under full load. Should I be worried?

Thanks

I would say yes, but the 290 and 290x run hot and the only way of really solving that issue is by doing water-cooling and the temps will be more around what your 7870 had for temps.

Those cards run hot on any cooling.  High 80's is pushing it a little. Try to optimize your case's airflow, increase fan speeds a little if you have to.  You could even try lowering the ambient temperature by getting an AC or some fans.

Crank up the fans. I did that on my reference 290 and I'm down to 75 at full load with ~67% fan speed.
