PC wont start

Go to solution Solved by Encleaver,

After getting my hands on testing parts(psu, cpu, ram and mobo) i found out that my motherboard was causing the issue. After putting old hardware into new mobo PC ran fine and when i put all new hardware in old mobo same problem(not starting properly and shuting down randomly)

Wish i was able to find out the issue sooner without wasting money on parts i wont need.

Thanks for replays.

Hello!

Im in a realy confusing situation. 2 days ago my PC wasnt starting. I did basic troubleshoot by checking all connectors, checked psu with paperclip, pulled out ram sticks and placed them 1 by 1 in different slots but nothing worked. After giving up i put everything back together and tried to power pc on and it worked. Managed to boot it and play some games for few minutes before PC shut it self down again and would not start again.

Next day i pulled out all components and and tried to see whats failing or not. PC started with 1 stick of ram and cpu(without cooler) once. After shuting it down(because cpu cooler wasnt installed) with mobo power button it did not start again for serval minutes.

Decidet to assembly pc completly on mobo box i was able to start pc few more times, but once i turned it off it wast turning on again for serval minutes...

Atm its running fine, but im afraid it i turn it off i will have to prey for it to start again.

Mobo: asus rog strix z790e gaming wifi

CPU: i9 13900k

GPU: 4090

RAM: corsair veneance ddr5 6000mhz rgb

PSU: asus thor 1200w

OS: windows 11 pro

Bios version 2703

PC just shut it self down again after making this post and wont turn on when i press power button on mobo.

A no power issue is usually related to the motherboard or power supply. Does it power on but fail to post or is it just not showing any signs of life at all when you press the power button?

At the moment nothing is hapening when i press power button. But it has been like that all day till it decides magicly to start up again. Like i said pc boots to windows and i can use it fully till it shuts it self down and then have to hit power button every few minutes to see if it will start or not

Test powering the system on by jumping the power pins on the board, unhook your case' power button and manually jump the two pins with a screwdriver. It's possible the power button is just bad, and that's why it worked when you were bench testing it on the mobo box. If it is able to power on every time you jump it while installed in the case I'd say your case power button is faulty. If it still has issues it's going to be the motherboard or the power supply, I'd say motherboard is more likely if it's down to those two.

Nothing is happening when i short those 2 pins with screwdriver, but i assumed if mobo has start button it does the same thing.

If any of the pc parts were broken/faulty woundt it prevent me from starting pc at all?

My knowlage is very weak when it comes to troubleshooting pc issues...

Just wanted to know what people think before going getting donor parts for testing

Ahh, yeah if it has a power button built into the board, that's what it does. If it's not powering on with that button either I'd say it's the board. If you have the ability to test a different board I'd do that. With the price of your board and PSU being pretty similar either one is going to suck to replace unless you're still within your return period. Both should still be under warranty but that can sometimes take a bit to get done. Just with the described symptoms I'd say the motherboard is more likely the culprit than the PSU especially if you jumped the PSU and it worked fine(it could still have an issue, without a tester that shows voltage you won't know just by jumping it).

I managed to get working psu from a friend and PC still wont turn on. What would be next in line for testing mobo, cpu?

PC booted up like 3 times yesterday while i was testing and run fine till it shut it self down. Hard to imagine that mobo or cpu would be bad at this point.

My resources are limited at the moment but im willing to explore all options.

There's been a big thing that past like 4 or 5 months where a bunch of 13th and 14th gen chips going bad, especially the 13900K and 14900K. Here is a little article I found that might help: Is your Intel CPU crashing? Here's how to RMA an Intel CPU | Digital Trends

While i was reading your post i went downstairs to grab a drink and when i came back pc was turned on... Like yesterday it was turning on sometimes on and then shuting it self down. Is this behaviour linked to dead or dying cpu?

Yes, I believe that's similar to what others were experiencing.
