Hey guys, I am looking for advice on GPU upgrade. I have been using my trusted GTX 1060 for years now, but I am feeling for months now that it is finally time to upgrade. Now what do you think I should do? Do I wait for the 5000 and 8000 series of GPUs and see what NVIDIA and AMD have to offer, or do I pull the trigger now? Btw, I am using Ryzen 5 5600x, and I will be replacing it with either Ryzen 5800x3d or Ryzen 77800x3d. Anyway, I want a good GPU that will serve me for years to come, just like my 1060 has been serving me all this time. I have a 144Hz 1080p monitor. I would like to use something like 4070 S or rx 7800xt. I realize that those cards are for 1440p gaming, but I am looking for a long-run GPU. If they now can play at 1440p, that doesn't mean they will be able to play newer games at 1400p in a few years. I really hate the fact that the 4060 only comes with 8 GB of VRAM when my 1060 came with 6 GB of VRAM 8 years ago...And I hate the fact that 4060 is just a 3060 reskin. So yeah, I would like to future-proof myself. I also realize that with the release of the 5000 and 8000 series of GPUs, the previous generation will probably go on discount. Anyway, I am open for suggestions. What should I do? Btw, one more important piece of information: I live in Europe, so prices here are in EURO and are usually a bit steeper than in the US, for example (600 dolar MSRP 4070 S in the EU costs 625 EURO or even like 650 EURO) (625EURO = 700 US dolars). So yeah, prices here are crazy. Have that in mind. I even looked for used 3070 and 3080, and they are even more expensive, like 500 EURO for 3080 used is an outrageous price.

Upgrading your CPU wouldn't really do much on 144Hz, just wasted money. If you want a future proof PC, get a used rx 6800/xt if you can afford, and upgrade to AM5 later when your 5600x is not enough

I am planing on upgrading my monitor later on. I forgot to mention that. But yea for now I would like to good a really good GPU. And I am aware of rx 6800 but like I said isn't it meaby better to wait and see what Nvidia and amd relese? if anything older GPU-s will go to discounted prices

Well yeah if you wait then older hardware will always go down in price. What is your budget for all the upgrades?

hmm not sure. I have also older PSU that i would like to replace for newer one and with more watts. So let's say my budget is around 1000 euros if I don't replace my motherboard for AM5 one, and if I do replace my motherboard with AM5 one then around 1500 Euros. Also forgot to mention that I might even go for ryzen 7 5700x3d if i stay on AM4 because it's not that expensive I think in my country It goes around 200 euro.

Then just get the 5700x3d, and the 6800xt. Which PSU are you using?

If playing the long game, get a 5700X3D and 4070 Super or 7900GRE (whichever is cheaper) this coming holiday

7900GRE is typically cheaper because people tend to lean with the more marketed brand's features (although they might not use them at all) but this is what the GRE can achieve

I myself have a 4070 Super and undervolted) because I wanted something that ran exceptionally cool. My decision could have been different if I had delayed the purchase a few weeks to find out about that video

I am using some corsair unit with 650w but it is like 6 or 7 years old at this point. I think it is called corsair cv650w or somthing like that. I don't remember the name clearly but I know for sure that it is only 80 plus just regular 80 plus not even bronze and I would like somthing with 80+ gold rating. And meaby even 1000W for future proffing? or is 800W or 850 good enough? Btw at this point I have 2 HDD in my sistem and disk drive ( don't aks why) and I plan to remove all that. BTW just checked brand new rx 6800xt and rx 7800xt have basicly the same price. I am not sure baout used ones... oh yea are AMD drivers now good?

Then might as well get the newer one if the price is not unreasonable

AMD drivers are perfectly fine now. If they weren't, all the big reviewers would have been constantly nagging about it and recommending against AMD graphics. That has not happened for a very long time already

If you are considering the 7800XT and regular 4070, there is a recent development you ought to know about

Most benchmarks and comparisons out there were made using 4070 that do not have downgraded memory

Yea I know I am aware of nvidia cutting memory to GDDR6 don't wory. I am trying to stay as much as up to date as I can.

They are fine, have been for years now.

I run 4 AMD GPUs and have no issues with any of them.
