Personally I would stay with Windows 7 and wait till Windows 9 is released though if you want to try it and have a free key then try it out and see for yourself.

you can and allowed to try, with one condition:

-Make sure you are ready to be disappointed.

I personally like Windows8, owning 1 laptop with Win8.1 Pro and 1 desktop with Win8.1 Pro as well but there are times that I'm so frustrated with it especially when I'm dealing with wireless connection.

It's been proven to generally add more performance and run better, use less memory, use less hard disk on a clean install etc. Metro isn't for everyone and the metro apps are borderline useless on a desktop PC. But as Lord Gaben said, if you install a third party Start Menu ( I reccomend classic shell FYI http://www.classicshell.net/ ) you'll come to terms with it quite easily and reap the performance benefit. Many games for instance have shown to run at noticeably higher FPS on 8 rather than 7.

This is what I think of Pre-Ordering video games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wp98SH3vW2Y

I was in the same boat as you. I love windows 7 and did not want to change. I literally changed over to Windows 8.1 Pro today (mostly because of the key being only $29 on G2A). I actually enjoy it quite a bit so far as long as I use Startisback, if that was not case I would still be with windows 7. Its a nice change and for the most part everything is running faster. I say go ahead and switch on over or get a virtual machine and test it out first to see if you like it or not!
