Hey y’all!!

As the title may suggest, I’m looking for a new Workstation laptop. I’m currently using a 2019 MacBook Pro with I9 chipset, but I need better graphics and RAM. I do a lot of 3D drafting and rendering in addition to large files in my classes and work so I’ve been looking for a fairly high specced machine. Specs and links are below fro my current machine and one I found, I’d love some feedback if y’all think I’m crazy!

MacBook Pro 2019

  • CPU: Intel I9 8 core, think an i9-9980hk but it’s not in any of Apple’s documentation

  • GPU: Radeon 5500m (8GB)

  • Ram: 32gb 2447mhz ddr4

  • SSD: 1tb, probably sata

MSI Creator 16AI (A1VHG-072US)

  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 185H

  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 4080M (12GB)

  • Ram: 64gb 5600mhz DDR5

  • SSD: 1TB NVME

The msi has terrible cooling severely limiting performance

What are size limits? A regular lenovo legion will cool much better however any intel chip is a FURNACE amd is coming out with their new hx series of chips and so far its a hilarious slaughter compared to any current amd or intel chip and its going against apples m series stuff. Laptops are coming out with it right now and since its a waaaaaay more efficient chip you have much better battery life + pote tial to have decent cooling.

So if you can wait a little more Id wait for those as that core 9 in that msi runs like what 30% slower under max load than on a proper cooled one?

Correction its 50% slower oof. Its thay thermal limited.

preferably a 16" machine, lighter is better b/c I likely will be carrying both machines with me. I'd like the machine to be somewhat "bland" so that it doesn't stand out too much. thanks!

The MSI laptop is powerful, but the battery will last like 30 mins of max load, and it won't even have the best perfotmance without being plugged in. So if you sit near an outlet, it's a good choice, otherwise not so much

even the MacBook only lasts 45-1hr on battery full bore so I'm not overly worried about the length of operation when doing full stress workloads since I'll be near power.

If ur near power, just find the most powerful laptop you can afford, and watch reviews on it to make sure it's good
