if they must be guaranteed to never go down.. you go with a platform that officially supports ECC and a set of QVL dimms.

if this is such a high priority requirement for you, it feels odd to go with an "it works but they dont give guarantees" solution. the only reason ECC works is because unlike intel, AMD didnt explicitly disable the option.

I plan to replace two machines, a 5950x and an Intel 9820X.

My new builds need to have ECC memory that functions fully and they will both run 24/7 without any overclocks and must be reliable and stable. Can a 9950x with an X670E Asus board do that reliably or should I just go with the TRX50 platform?? It seems like I have a hard time getting clear information on ECC memory working on the AM5 motherboards. Some say that even when it works, it only detects bit flips and NOT failing memory chips. I need it to detect both.

AFAIK, motherboards like the ProArt do support ECC without issues.

Yeah, that's what ECC does, and it should correct those in most cases.

AFAIK, that's not really related to ECC itself, but rather having a BMC that's able to detect so and relay this information to the OS, so you should probably look for one of those workstation motherboards. Maybe look in the ones meant for Epyc 4004?
