Old PC NAS?

I have wanted to build a NAS for some time now and I don't know where to start and if I should buy one or build one. I want to have a NAS mainly for a plex server and some family videos, picture, and other files. Then I remembered I had an old PC in my closet and I wanted to ask y'all could I use it or is of any use and if so where do I start in building a NAS. I will provide some pictures I have of it.

Thanks in advance

A frankly nice build to start with. There are three major concerns though:

  • Stability issues may occur with Linux in the 1st gen Ryzen processors, especially with an older Linux kernel (for example, this thread on Level1Tech). A possible mitigation is to disable power saving features (C-state) in BIOS.
  • The storage capacity may be constrained by SATA ports and/or power cables. I've spotted 2 ports and one drive, this means at least 2 drives can be connected to it, although whether they can be mounted into the chassis remains unknown.
  • Plex does not prefer AMD GPUs, while Jellyfin may utilize them in case of transcoding.

  • 2 weeks later...

Do you think I can salvage anything from this old PC?

The designs of motherboard and power supply are proprietary, and would not allow them to be installed in generic chassis. Other than that, the processor, the GPU, RAM and the DVD drive may be took out and reused on other platforms. This cooler might fit into generic Intel boards, maybe until the LGA1200 era.

It's perfectly serviceable as a home NAS as-is. Get a cheap used Quadro card (or an ARC A310) if you're worried about video transcoding performance.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.
