I know the gear isn’t optimal, but I got it all for $50, so I’m working with what I’ve got.

I have a Qnap TS31-P 2 bay NAS running whatever Qnap’s software is called. I am trying to connect to it a Dell Optiplex 3040m running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Ive installed 2 drives in the NAS, created a RAID 1 pool, and created a shared folder on that pool with login credentials using Qnaps browser UI

I connected the NAS to the Optiplex using a CAT-5 cable, and established a network named QNAP with link-local selected in the IPv4 settings, and IPv6 disabled in Ubuntu. I see the NAS MAC address on this “network”

However when I go to Other Locations in Ubuntu I don’t see any network attached storage. I also downloaded Qnap’s software and attempted to map the drive that way with no success (just opens a Files window to nowhere)

The part that really gets me is the fact that I can access the Qnap UI in my browser, and the NAS shows up in Qfinder Pro, but I can’t seem to ‘see’ it any other way. The Optiplex has a wifi connection, but the NAS’ only network connection is the CAT-5 cable to the Optiplex.

Can you try manually adding the location?
https://askubuntu.com/questions/46183/how-to-map-a-network-drive

I followed the link and attempted to use smbclient -L to list active shares on my network with no sucess. It lists share names print$ and IPC$ which are identified in their comments as printer drivers and IPC Service (Optiplex) respectively.

The only other detail I could think might be useful in diagnosing is that when I access the server gui in a browser, the up address is 169.254.X.XXX:8080

In Ubuntu settings, the IPv4 address of the link local network to the QNAP is 196.254.XXX.XXX

QNAP works best if you attach it to your Router and it should have it's own IP address which will show up in the QNAP browser, or you can search for it by its IP address or NAS Name (ie) \\192.168.x.x or \\NAS Name.
